Most lingerie is bought quickly and worn briefly. The reasons are usually the same: the fabric does not hold up to washing, the fit was approximate rather than accurate, or the piece was bought for a specific occasion and has no life beyond it. A different approach to buying produces a different result.

Start with the Fabric

The fabric determines almost everything else: how the piece feels, how it washes, how long it lasts, and how it moves. Synthetic lace and polyester satin are inexpensive and widely available, but they do not improve with wear. Natural fibres, silk and cotton in particular, tend to soften slightly with careful washing and hold their structure over time.

For a sheer set, the relevant question is what the lace is made of and how it was produced. Leavers lace and Raschel lace look similar in a photograph but behave very differently against the skin and over time.

Fit Over Size

Lingerie sizing is not standardised across makers. A size M from one house may fit very differently from a size M from another, particularly in structured pieces like bralettes and bodysuits. The most useful information is a detailed measurement guide specific to the garment, not a general size chart.

For bias-cut pieces like slips and camisoles, fit is more forgiving because the fabric has inherent stretch. For structured pieces, the fit of the cup and the band are the critical measurements.

Consider How You Will Wear It

A piece worn alone, as a garment in itself, needs to work in full light and in movement. A piece worn under clothing needs to be smooth enough not to show through and light enough not to add bulk. A piece worn for a specific occasion may have different priorities from either of these.

Thinking about the context before buying tends to produce a more satisfying result than choosing on appearance alone. The questions about sizing and care in our FAQ are a useful starting point for first-time buyers.

The pieces that stay in a wardrobe for years are usually the ones that were chosen carefully rather than quickly. That is a straightforward observation, but it is worth making before a purchase.
