Why a Room Candle Belongs in a Lingerie Collection
The Bougies de Chambre line was not an obvious addition to a lingerie collection. Candles are a crowded category, and the connection between scent and intimate apparel is easy to make in a superficial way. The decision to add them came from a specific observation: the atmosphere of a room is part of the experience of wearing something carefully made, and scent is the fastest way to change the atmosphere of a room.
The Three Compositions
Figuier Tardif was the first composition, developed in 2020 alongside the autumn collection of that year. The brief was a late-summer scent that would work in the cooler months: fig leaf as the top note, cedar and amber as the base. The fig leaf note is green and slightly milky, which keeps the composition from reading as purely woody.
Iris Sombre followed in the same season. The brief was cooler and more mineral: iris root, vetiver, white musk. Iris root has a powdery, slightly earthy quality that is difficult to place. It does not read as floral in the conventional sense. The vetiver grounds it without adding smoke.
Nuit Blanche, the newest composition, was developed over eighteen months and released in autumn 2026. The starting point was tuberose, a white floral that tends toward the heavy. The base of sandalwood and benzoin grounds it, and a small amount of iris root in the heart adds a mineral quality that prevents the composition from becoming sweet.
Production in Kyoto
All three candles are poured in Kyoto by a perfumer who works primarily with natural materials. The vessel is a 200g clear glass, chosen for its neutrality. The wax blend is one the perfumer has been refining for several years; it burns cleanly and does not produce the black soot that some paraffin-heavy blends do.
Burn time is approximately forty-five hours for all three compositions. The scent throw is moderate, designed for a bedroom or a small sitting room rather than a large open space.
The three-candle set at ¥23,000 was introduced this autumn as a way to offer all three compositions together. It is also a considered gift for the season, for someone who already has the collection or for someone who does not yet.
